EVALUATION & REFLECTION

My original aim for my Final Major Project was to create a podcast dedicated to women in the music industry. I was going to host this podcast with my friend Charlotte, a music journalist. We created a rough plan for the podcast, including content, guests, a schedule and a design, but I decided to change my focus a few weeks in.

I changed my project focus to photography as I had a lot of shoots booked for the upcoming weeks and it made sense to merge it with the project rather than do a podcast. I also felt more confident doing photography due to previous experience, and thought it would be more beneficial to develop this. The college has a professional photo studio with backdrops, lights and coloured gels too which I wanted to use to get better at studio shoots as this was something I had only done twice before.

This went a lot better than the podcast as I felt more confident with the tasks and had more inspiration. I was able to book 3 extra shoots at college for the project and collaborate with other students for this. The photos also received great feedback from the students and band I worked with, with the photos of the band doing really well on social media and receiving good engagement from my audience.

I captured lots of new content to put on my portfolio, including a new page for studio photos, which will help me secure more job opportunities in the future as it shows I have experience in a few different types of photography and am therefore more flexible with shoots. I also created another website dedicated to this project to ensure each photo can be seen. In my portfolio, I only use a small selection of my best photos there as having lots is quite distracting and people won’t have enough time to look at all the pages. I also don’t have pages for each specific shoot so it would be difficult to see which images belonged to which shoot. However, because this new website is dedicated to the project, I can have a page for each shoot.

I struggled with time management throughout this project, often not finishing the work on time and having to catch up. This was due to work commitments outside of college and also underestimating how long some tasks were going to take. This is something I will need to work on for the next project. Although everything did work out in the end, it might not work next time and I may have more people relying on me who won’t be happy with missed deadlines. I need to plan better in advance and make sure I give myself enough time to complete tasks on time.

Something else I struggled with was replying to messages and emails fast. I tend to open messages and emails when I don’t have a chance to reply and forget to reply for a few days. This happened when organising a couple of the shoots, but it didn't affect the artists involved. Although it hasn’t yet, this can cause me to lose opportunities and so it needs to be improved on before the next project.
