APPLICATION FOR SOMETHING

I have been applying for freelance photography jobs with different management companies. I have a list of artists I feel my photography style fits and finding contact details for their management and sending over my portfolio. The email template I have been using is:
I received a response from a management company with an impressive roster, they said they currently don't have anything but have added me to their list of creatives and will contact me in the future when something suitable comes up.
The application process involved me _____.
For this unit, we will be thinking about who we are and where we want to take our career once we finish college. We will be developing our professional persona and presenting ourselves to the creative industries with our CVs, portfolios, networking skills, etc.

CV

As I want to work in the music industry when I leave college, I tailored my CV to only include experience relevant to that industry. I took out all the information about my part-time hospitality work and instead listed all the music experience I have.

Once I was happy with the draft, I had a friend in the industry (who works at a label) read over it and check it was alright. I had listed my experience by relevance, but she said it would be better to change the order to by date, starting with the most recent at the top. I adjusted this and she checked it again and said it was perfect.

Evaluation:

This week went quite well – I was able to organise the shoot with Alicia Dutton over email and create moodboards to refer to on the day. I also got some research done which I included on the moodboards. This research involved looking at different photos and discussing how they were shot and how I could recreate this. The shoot is in 3 weeks, which means I have more time to expand on my ideas if I feel it’s necessary.
My plan for the next 3 weeks is to plan for Flowvers’ upcoming studio shoot, learn how to use my new film camera, and do the shoots with Alicia Dutton & Flowvers.

Evaluation:

This week was very productive. I organised the studio shoot with Flowvers, created moodboards for the day (also including pictures they sent over for reference) and researched flashgun settings and how to use my new film camera.
I did the shoot with Alicia Dutton on Thursday (29th). We had the studio for 3 hours, but were done within 2.5. This was very successful - we experimented with a few different light colour combos and backdrops. I wasn’t able to get the photos finished this week as the shoot was late in the week and I had another one 3 days after, so this will be one of the tasks for next week.
On Sunday, I did the shoot with Flowvers in Chichester. I was only supposed to be there for 3 hours, but ended up staying for 8. We got hundreds of photos and even some videos of the rehearsal which wasn’t planned before – this was something I decided to do on the day. In-between songs I was able to edit some of the photos as I brought my laptop with me, but these weren’t the finalised edits – only black & white versions to see how the photos were turning out and to check if the band were happy with them.
Next week, my focus is to get the photos from the 2 shoots finished and sent over, and also plan and shoot for Ellie’s Corner.

Evaluation:

I didn’t finish all the work I wanted to do this week. This was due to me taking on a huge workload and doing full-time hours at my part-time job
I began the week by continuing with the editing for Alicia Dutton & Flowvers’ photos. For these, I used Lightroom for general editing and then Photoshop to get rid of unwanted objects or extend the background.
I prioritised Flowvers’ photos over Alicia’s even though her shoot was first as their photos were more of a priority – they needed them sooner. I finished the drafts and sent them to the band in a Google Photos folder for them to have a look. I wanted to check they were happy with the editing style before sending over the final download link.
On Wednesday, I used the day to plan for Ellie’s photoshoot. I didn’t have to do much research or planning for this as I was only taking behind the scenes photos and was already familiar with the photography studio, having used it twice before, so I got this done quicker than expected.
On Thursday, I did the shoot for Ellie’s Corner. I helped Ellie setup and test the microphones and then set up the lighting. Ellie didn’t have a plan for the lights so I gave suggestions and we settled on pink to match her logo and branding. This went very well and I was able to capture lots of photos for her to use on her social media.
The rest of the week was spent working so my focus next week will be on catching up on editing and getting photos sent over.

Evaluation:

This week was spent on catching up on editing from the previous 3 shoots.
I heard back from Flowvers about the photos. They were happy with the way I edited the photos so I uploaded the edited RAW files to Lightroom Classic, exported in the highest quality possible & created a WeTransfer link. I then sent this link over in an email to the band and their manager to download.
The next photos to get finished and sent were Alicia Dutton’s. I finished editing the final few photos and made adjustments to some of the backgrounds in Photoshop. Once I was happy with them, I repeated the same exporting process used for Flowvers’ photos and sent the link over to both Alicia and Grace.
I then edited Ellie’s photos and sent them over to her. These were much quicker to do as the presets used were the same for Alicia’s photos, meaning the editing needed was minimal – only exposure, shadows and cropping had to be adjusted. I also changed the background for a few in Photoshop.
As I hadn’t posted on Instagram for a couple of weeks, I needed to get a new post uploaded. I also wanted to start posting some of the Flowvers pictures from the previous week as they are some of my best work yet and I wanted people to see. I settled on posting 4, with one being a portrait and the other three being action shots. These performed really well, reaching over 100 likes 3 saves.
Overall, this week went really well. I got lots of great feedback on my photos from the artists and lots of new content to use on my portfolio.
Next week, I’ll be focusing on updating my portfolio and Wix website.

This week was very productive.
I spent the week updating my websites with my work – including planning, research, photos, etc.
I’ve used Wix throughout college to upload my work, so the process was simple and required no research. Adobe Portfolio used to be the website I used for my photography portfolio, but I switched to Format in May last year. As I have previously used it, I didn't have to learn how to do anything and creating pages and uploading my photos was quite simple. The same also applies to Format as like the other websites, I used it before this project.
I also took photos of the two gigs Grace hosted at college as part of METFest. These didn’t go as planned due to the lighting - the stage was in front of some trees and the artists performed when the sun was behind the trees, causing uneven shadows. This made the lighting difficult to work with. Also, the background was too distracting. There was too much going on and it made the subjects blend in, making it difficult to tell what's going on in the photos. The photos didn’t turn out how I wanted them to, unfortunately.
As next week is deadline week, I will carry on uploading work and ensuring my work is to the highest standard ready to hand in.
