The music performance students were to play 3 concerts in the Theatre Bar in early November and us event students were given the responsibility of marketing the gigs. We split up into 3 teams and each one was designated a night.

 

The group I was put in consisted of Morgan, Scott and Vinnie and we were assigned with the 2nd year ‘Jazz and music from around the World’ performance on the 5th November. 

 

For our marketing campaign we decided to keep it simple and just display flyers and posters around the college. It was a small concert by students held in the Theatre Bar for their course and so the target audience was just other Northbrook students. Therefore, we did not feel it was necessary to run a large, public campaign as our target audience was quite small and very niche.

 

We designed a few posters to put up around the college, as well as a flyer containing more information.

This is the poster I designed using a website called Canva. I decided to keep it quite simple as I did not feel it was necessary to fill it with a lot of information and images when we also had the flyers.

The original design I had in mind was to have a background filled with silhouette images of singers and typical jazz instruments. However, this did not end up working as Canva does not allow transparent backgrounds. Instead, I found a copyright-free image taken at a jazz concert online and turned down the opacity so you could still read the text. I had a different layout for the text at the top too but had to move it around when I changed my background as it did not fit the new design.

 

Despite the final poster not turning out how I had originally planned, I still think it turned out well. However, we did not end up using this one - Morgan’s one was put up around the college instead.

 

Next time, I do not think I would use Canva to design promotional posters. It is good to get inspirations for your work, but it has limited features and Photoshop is a lot more flexible with what you can do on there - you have more creative control.
